Wash our Clothes – Did You Know?

Share now

This is the way we wash our clothes so early in the morning! Remember that cute line from the song “This is the Way we Wash Our Clothes?” Well, what would you do if you did not have a working washer or dryer? Look here for some fascinating ideas:

  • Option A: Buy a five-gallon bucket and plunger. Put water, soap, and clothes in bucket. Drill a few holes in plunger. Drill hole in bucket top to fit plunger handle. Slide plunger through bucket top. Move the plunger up and down to wash the clothes. You will need a separate bucket for rinsing the clothes.
  • Option B: Buy a washboard and mop bucket. You can find them in Ace Hardware or Home Depot. Fill the bucket with soap and water. Rub clothes up and down the washboard.
  • Sing the song, This is the Way we Wash Our Clothes
  • Hand wring your clothes. Hang up clothes on clothesline and let them dry in the sun

Homeschoolers: Sketch/color an illustration. Theme: wash clothes. Younger students: write each vocabulary word (wash, clothes, bucket, plunger, clothesline, washerwoman) five times. Older students: Use each word in a sentence. Finish this sentence: My clothes get dirty when…  Read the story called Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Describe the washerwoman.
