A prayer of “how long?”

Where is God? Read or listen to the “Prayer” story in Learning to Read: New Testament Stories.  Some days, we may need to feel the presence of heaven in our lives more fully. Those times might include –

  • when we are sick
  • when others are sick
  • when we feel nothing but aloneness
  • when we feel no answer is in sight
  • when we feel helpless
  • when we long for the comfort of another’s hand
  • when we pray but nothing happens
  • when we feel grief
  • when tears flow
  • when we feel pain
  • when burdens are hard to bear

Where is my God? Is He in the heavens? Is He not on earth here amongst us?  Where can I see God? Where is God’s loving hand? Do we believe in miracles today? Did they not occur during the time of Jesus on earth? Why do the poor and sick suffer? Why do the mountains not tremble? Why does the sky not show forth the veil between earth and heaven? Why canst I not hear His loving lips proclaim His mercy and dominion? We see the stars. We see the sky. We see the birds. We see a newborn babe. We see those who have a chance to exercise their agency and once again return to His presence. Where is my God? Am I not to rise to my calling? What doth it profit anyone to lose a day, to lose a month, to lose time to do good? Is there anything good in sickness? Is there anything good in not being able to serve others? Can anything good be found in grief? Why must the veil of forgetfulness between heaven and earth go on? For how long Lord before I see the glory of Thy majesty? How can I take this pain and use it to better serve Thee?
