Mormon crickets

These scary-looking crickets are everywhere-in your face and on the sidewalk! Some even try to sneak in past the front door of your house! Millions of crickets have swarmed several counties in Nevada. Did you know –

  • The insects are covering the ground, trees, shrubs and even climbing the walls
  • The crickets can grow up to 2 inches (8 cm) in length
  • The crickets vary in color from green, and brown to black depending on their age, location and diet
  • They hit your head when you go outside
  • People are using leaf blowers and brooms to push them away from their doors
  • They jump into electric outlets
  • The massive crickets smell terrible
  • The crickets are covering roads and clinging to houses
  • Inside your house it sounds like it is raining water, but it is the crickets falling down from the sky

Homeschoolers/Educators/Parents: sketch/color an illustration and label it. Theme: falling from the sky. Listen to the exciting audiobook story “Chicken Little” in Learning to Read: Fairy Tale Adventures. Write and say the words “Mormon crickets” five times so you can pronounce and spell it correctly. Explain why Chicken Little said, “the sky is falling.” Put these words in alphabetical order: sky, insects, danger, hit, crickets, home. Use each word in a sentence. List two facts about the Mormon crickets. Write about crickets and other insects. Skills: identify, comprehend, apply, creative.
